April 2017 Newsletter
The winter season has again been a busy time for Uffington Tennis Club with two teams competing in the Swindon and District mixed doubles winter leagues. In Division 3, the mixed doubles A team have had an excellent season finishing as runners-up in the league to Nationwide. The league was very close and Uffington only lost out on winning the league by having won 2 fewer sets than Nationwide over the whole season. The A team along with Nationwide will be promoted to Division 2 next winter so there will be some tougher challenges ahead. The B team, captained by Juliet Moss and playing in Division 5 finished 4th. Division 5 featured some very strong sides this year such as the Delta A team and Swindon C team so finishing mid-table was a good result. Having played one B team game myself I suspect that the quality of some of the teams in Division 5 was not to different to those in Division 3.
After taking over as Club Chairman at Uffington I was keen that the club should be involved in a competitive tennis league so I was delighted when only a couple of years after taking over, Ruth Thomas suggested to me we enter a team in the Swindon and District Leagues. Since then the club and a large number of its members have enjoyed taking part in these Leagues. Ruth has now decided to step down from the clubs committee and her work in running the League Teams so I'd like to say a big thank-you to Ruth for all her hard work in the last 4 seasons. Annabel Campbell will be taking Ruths place on the committee as the Clubs Team Captain. Going forward into the summer season we have entered a ladies team (captained by Juliet Moss) and a mixed team (captained by Annabel Campbell) into the league. If anyone that has not been playing matches is interested in playing in the teams then please contact me or Annabel (email@example.com) as we are always keen to get new players involved. We will also continue to play friendly matches with other local clubs.
Many of you will remember that the tennis club has been allocated a grant of £7808 from the developer who has built the Jacks Meadow houses on Station Road in Uffington. Last year the club held a consultation on how members would like to spend the money. Many of you sent in your preferences or attended the AGM to discuss this. The most popular options were to construct a gravel path to the courts and a shelter by the courts. It is expected that the money from the developer will be released to the Vale of White Horse District Council in the next 2 to 3 months when the required number of open market houses on Jacks Meadow have been sold. At the moment the clubs committee is making plans for a shelter and path and once the money has been released we will make an application to the Council for it and hope to proceed with the plans later this year.
As many of you will remember, last season Mark Thomas took over the coaching at Uffington and many of you benefitted from and enjoyed Marks tuition. Unfortunately for the moment Mark is unable to coach as he is taking some time off to focus on his health. The club and I wish Mark all the best and we are very keen to have him back on court with us at Uffington. As soon as I have any further information on when coaching will restart I will be in touch.
Last September, in collaboration with Woolstone Church, we held a very successful fundraising tournament and BBQ which the Spink family kindly allowed us to hold in the gardens of their house. 32 people played in the tournament and around 70 attended the BBQ and in total £930 was raised, half of which went to Woolstone Church and half to the tennis club. Due to the success of the event, we intend to hold a similar event this year, probably in early September (date to be confirmed).
I hope you all enjoy the coming season and I look forward to seeing you down at the courts.
Membership fees have been frozen for the fourth year in a row.
Membership Renewal Process
For active members, the club secretary Mike Rafferty will send a Payment Request on 31 Mar 16 or soon after. This e-mail will also take you through the ClubSpark registration process.
If you already have a LTA, Facebook, Google or Microsoft account there is no need to register for Clubspark as you can login with this. We recommend you use your existing LTA British Tennis Membership account or become an LTA British Tennis Member for free if you aren't already one.
Once you login, you will see your current membership status. You will also be asked to edit your contact details (e.g. address, phone numbers etc). Please check your details to make sure they are correct.
For non-members (ie membership 'pending') you will need to select a membership package option and click 'Join Now'. This will take you through the registration process and on to the payment options.
Currently there are 2 payment options which are the same as last year. You can either send a cheque to the Secretary or pay by on-line bank transfer to the clubs account (instructions are given on how to do this by Clubspark). Once a payment option is selected, payment is shown as 'Pending'. Once we receive the payment, we will change your status to paid. You will only be able to see your status, not the status of others.
These will be dispatched as soon as your subscriptions are received.
All members are welcome at club nights and these will as usual be on Wednesdays at 1830 beginning on 26 April. For the first club night of the season on April 26th potential members are welcome to come along and meet members of the club, afterwards we will head to the Fox and Hounds for an informal social evening and the ballot for Wimbledon tickets. All are most welcome.
These have taken place through the winter on Tuesday mornings weather permitting at 0930. These are co-ordinated by Keith Jarvis so please get in touch with him should you need any further information (email: firstname.lastname@example.org, tel: 01367 820943).
The club has been allocated three pairs of Wimbledon tickets this year (Pair 1 - Thursday 6 July - Centre Court - £146 for 2 tickets, Pair 2 - Friday 7 July - No 1 Court - £148 for 2 tickets, Pair 3 - Monday 3 July - No. 2 Court - £82 for 2 tickets) . The ballot for these tickets will take place after club evening on Wednesday 26 April in the Fox and Hounds Pub in Uffington. Full details of how to enter the ballot has already been sent out by email to members. The ballot will only be open to members of both Uffington Lawn Tennis Club and the LTA. Membership of the LTA is free for members of Uffington Lawn Tennis Club. All you have to do is go to the LTA website and sign up.
LTA Affiliation and British Tennis Membership
As the club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), members are eligible for free British Tennis Membership. Benefits of British Tennis Membership include, entry into the clubs ballot for Wimbledon tickets, discounts and pre-sales on tickets for events, and a monthly e-newsletter. We would like to strongly encourage all members (adults and juniors) to join as the number of British Tennis Members we have will determine the number of Wimbledon tickets that we are allocated. Once you are a member of the club you can become a British Tennis Member online or by telephone on 0845 8737202.
These will be arranged as usual against other villages. If you would like to play, please let me know. So far home and away matches against Wantage have been arranged. Further matches will be arranged soon. Please see the website for dates and times.

Vale Singles League
Uffington Tennis Club is part of the Vale Singles Tennis League. The League is organised by a company that arranges similar local leagues across the country. Run by Local Tennis Leagues, in association with the local clubs (Uffington, Wantage, Letcombe & Hendreds), the next league runs from from Thursday 13 April to Wednesday 7 June (entries by Monday 10 April). Players are organised into groups of a similar level and arrange their own singles matches at a mutually convenient time. Any court that suits both players can be used and the clubs are offering reciprocal agreements for members to play matches with non-members. Entry is £15, to enter go to the following website.
If you have any good ideas for the club please let me know. We rely on your membership and support to keep the club going.
