April 2018 Newsletter
The winter season has again been a busy time for Uffington Tennis Club with two teams competing in the Swindon and District mixed doubles winter leagues. The two Uffington teams have had mixed fortunes. The B team, playing in Division 5 had an excellent season and finished as runners up to Chippenham B which guarantees the team promotion to Division 4. After a mixed start, the team soon found form and after an 8-0 drubbing of Swindon D in mid-November the team were undefeated until an unfortunate loss to Fairford B on the last day of the season. Top performers for the Bs were the experienced Juliet Moss and newcomer Francesca Dudon, both of whom were amongst the top ten players in the Division.
After a fantastic run of 3 promotions in 4 seasons the A team found themselves playing in Division 2. Unfortunately the step up in quality proved too much and after a run of 10 morale sapping defeats the team found themselves languishing at the base of Division 2 in early March. The run of defeats finally ended on Mothers Day when an inspired performance by team captain Annabel Campbell propelled the team to a 6-2 win over Purton. The team finished the season on a high with Alan Marshall holding his nerve to win a final set tiebreak and secure a 5-3 win at Fairford. Unfortunately the team still finished near the bottom of Division 2 and will therefore drop down to Division 3 next season.
Going forward into the summer season we have entered a ladies team (captained by Anne Hollingworth) and a mixed team (captained by Annabel Campbell) into the league. If anyone that has not been playing matches is interested in playing in the teams then please contact me or Annabel (email@example.com) as we are always keen to get new players involved. We will also continue to play friendly matches with other local clubs.
Many of you will remember that the tennis club was allocated a grant of £7808 from the developer who has built the Jacks Meadow houses on Station Road in Uffington. Last year the club held a consultation on how members would like to spend the money. Many of you sent in your preferences or attended the AGM to discuss this. The most popular options were to construct a gravel path to the courts and a shelter by the courts. These projects were completed over the winter and have made access much easier to the courts when the sports field is waterlogged. Obviously the path and shelter will add to the clubs maintenance costs. To reflect this, the membership fees have been increased this year for the first time in 4 years. The adult fee has increased by £5 and the family membership fee by £10. All junior, student and guest fees remain the same.
As many of you know the club is affiliated to the LTA. This year the LTA is introducing new requirements for clubs that are LTA affiliated. These requirements include having a suitably qualified welfare officer and safeguarding, and diversity and inclusion policies. Once these policies are finalised they will appear on the club webpage. Lynne Artus who is our new club secretary, will also act as the clubs wefare officer. Lynne is experienced in working with young people and holds all the necessary qualifications. Anybody who has any concerns with regard to safeguarding at Uffington Tennis Club should contact Lynne directly (email: firstname.lastname@example.org, tel: 01367 820109).
One of the discussion topics at last years AGM was how to increase interest in the Wednesday club evenings. One suggestion discussed was to once a month have a special club evening with a social aspect at the end. The dates for these are 25 April, 13 June, 1 August, and 5 September. On the 25 April we will have our Wimbledon Ballot at the Fox and Hounds and have dinner there for those that want it, and on the 13 June we will have cheese and wine at the courts. Further details for the 1 August and 5 September events will be shared in due course. One other date to note this year is the annual tournament and BBQ. This will take place on Sunday 1 July at 1400h and the format will be similar to previous years (see below for further details).
Tom Wilsdon remains the clubs coach and offers both private and group coaching sessions at the club. He will be offering junior coaching sessions on a Tuesday after school starting on Tuesday 17 April. Tom also offers a Cardio tennis session for adults on Tuesdays from 1130 to 1230. Dates, times and prices of these sessions can be found below. To join any of these sessions or for more information please contact Tom directly (Tel: 07729283603, email: email@example.com).
I hope you all enjoy the coming season and I look forward to seeing you down at the courts.
As discussed above, the membership fees have been increased after four seasons of price freezes.

Membership Renewal Process
For active members, the club secretary, Lynne Artus, will send a Payment Request on 31 Mar 18 or soon after. This e-mail takes you to Clubspark so you can renew your membership.
If you already have a LTA, Facebook, Google or Microsoft account there is no need to register for Clubspark as you can login with this. We recommend you use your existing LTA British Tennis Membership account or become an LTA British Tennis Member for free if you aren't already one.
Once you login, you will see your current membership status. You will also be asked to edit your contact details (e.g. address, phone numbers etc). Please check your details to make sure they are correct.
For non-members (ie membership 'pending') you will need to select a membership package option and click 'Join Now'. This will take you through the registration process and on to the payment options.
Currently there are 2 payment options which are the same as last year. You can either send a cheque to the Secretary or pay by on-line bank transfer to the clubs account (instructions are given on how to do this by Clubspark). Once a payment option is selected, payment is shown as 'Pending'. Once we receive the payment, we will change your status to paid. You will only be able to see your status, not the status of others.
These will be dispatched as soon as your subscriptions are received.
Our junior tennis programme is designed to suit players from the ages of 5 and above and is split into 3 levels. From 17 April Tom Wilsdon will be running three regular junior sessions on Tuesdays. These are:

All members are welcome at club nights and these will as usual be on Wednesdays at 1830 beginning on 25 April. For the first club night of the season on April 25th potential members are welcome to come along and meet members of the club, afterwards we will head to the Fox and Hounds for an informal social evening and the ballot for Wimbledon tickets. All are most welcome.
These have taken place through the winter on Tuesday mornings weather permitting at 0930. These are co-ordinated by Keith Jarvis so please get in touch with him should you need any further information (email: firstname.lastname@example.org, tel: 01367 820943).
The club has been allocated four pairs of Wimbledon tickets this year (Pair 1 - Saturday 7 July - Centre Court - £204 for 2 tickets, Pair 2 - Monday 9 July - No 2 Court - £140 for 2 tickets, Pair 3 - Wednesday 4 July - No. 1 Court - £120 for 2 tickets, Pair 4 - Friday 13 July - No. 1 Court - £76 for 2 tickets) . The ballot for these tickets will take place after club evening on Wednesday 25 April in the Fox and Hounds Pub in Uffington. Full details of how to enter the ballot will be sent out shortly by email to members. The ballot will only be open to members of both Uffington Lawn Tennis Club and the LTA. Membership of the LTA is free for members of Uffington Lawn Tennis Club. All you have to do is go to the LTA website and sign up.
LTA Affiliation and British Tennis Membership
As the club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), members are eligible for free British Tennis Membership. Benefits of British Tennis Membership include, entry into the clubs ballot for Wimbledon tickets, discounts and pre-sales on tickets for events, and a monthly e-newsletter. We would like to strongly encourage all members (adults and juniors) to join as the number of British Tennis Members we have will determine the number of Wimbledon tickets that we are allocated. Once you are a member of the club you can become a British Tennis Member online or by telephone on 0845 8737202.
These will be arranged as usual against other villages. If you would like to play, please let me know. So far home and away matches against Wantage have been arranged. Further matches will be arranged soon. Please see the website for dates and times.
Swindon and District League Matches
The club has entered mixed and ladies doubles teams into the summer league of the Swindon and District League. Ladies doubles home matches will be played on Tuesday evenings at 1830 (roughly every other week) through the summer amd the mixed teams will play at home on Thursday evenings at 1830 (roughly every other week). The courts will therefore be unavailable at these times and will be marked as booked on the Clubspark court booking page (link on www.uffingtontennis.co.uk). If anyone wishes to play in these matches please contact me (email: email@example.com ) or the team Captain Annabel (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Tennis Club Fundraising Tournament
The club will hold an annual mixed doubles tournament on Sunday 1 July at 1400h. Players will play with multiple partners so there is no need to have a partner to enter. The tournament will be held across several tennis courts in the Uffington and Woolstone area and will finish with a final and BBQ at the Mill House in Woolstone by kind invitation of Fran and Justin Spink. Non-players are welcome to spectate and attend the supper. The tournament entry fee will be £10.00. The BBQ will be £12.50 for adults, £6 for Under 12s, and £30 for a family ticket.
Vale Singles League
Uffington Tennis Club is part of the Vale Singles Tennis League. The League is organised by a company that arranges similar local leagues across the country. Run by Local Tennis Leagues, in association with the local clubs (Uffington, Wantage, Letcombe & Hendreds), the next league runs from from Thursday 13 April to Wednesday 7 June (entries by Monday 10 April). Players are organised into groups of a similar level and arrange their own singles matches at a mutually convenient time. Any court that suits both players can be used and the clubs are offering reciprocal agreements for members to play matches with non-members. Entry is £15, to enter go to the following website.
If you have any good ideas for the club please let me know. We rely on your membership and support to keep the club going.
